KNOPPIX - Release FAQKnopper.Net Consulting

Question: When is the next release of KNOPPIX?

ANSWER: The answer falls into two categories:
  1. For ordered, paid versions and "special editions", there is usually a due date which is guaranteed exclusively to the customer paying for the work. Since there is a certain time frame that has to go into engineering, updates, bugfixes and testing, dedicated work on the software is necessary to hold deadlines. Which is only possible if all of us have lots of spare time (which is unlikely), or working time is allocated at an agreed-on fee. So, the deadline for these editions is whatever is requested by the paying customer, and possible within todays technical limitations.

  2. For the public download version, which is usually available on the Knoppix Mirrors or which can be ordered via postal service from various places, the CD and DVD "is ready when it's ready", i.e. considerably free of known bugs, looking stable and useful. There is no way of knowing an exact date for this in advance. All predictions are unreliable and likely to be false. Really. The development of the download edition has low priority in comparison of contract work with fixed due dates that MUST be kept. Most of our developers have few spare time to do unpaid work, and therefore, we can't promise anything, even that we would really like to be able to just tell you a specific day when the new version is available for download. Plus, during the development, new kernel and application software versions are known to get released by related projects, and updating the software, including sufficient testing, delays the release further.
