GRAPHICS CONTRIBUTIONS TO KNOPPIX ========================================================================== Since our painting/drawing capabilities are very limited (you can guess from the Knoppix 2.1 wallpaper...), Knopper.Net offers the following to all interested graphic artists: You send us a graphics package for inclusion in Knoppix, and, if the package is accepted for a Knoppix release, we promote your website or business via a link that you can place on the desktop wallpaper (see below) in return. GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS ============================ Most important, Licenses: All graphics must be licensed by and from the author(s) for "free distribution, for non-commercial as well as commercial use, without restrictions" for inclusion in Knoppix and derivates thereof. Especially, it must be possible for third parties to distribute and sell remastered Knoppix CDs or DVDs including the graphics, unchanged or in modified form. A good starting point for a Knoppix-compatible graphics license is this version of the Creative Commons: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5/deed.en All graphics should NOT include the Knoppix or Knopper.Net logo or any version numbers, since we would like to use the same pictures for different versions and derivates, and fill in these items by ourselves (using Gimp) on demand later. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS: ========================= Wallpaper ========= Format: 1024x768 Pixels, suitable for post-processing with GIMP. Colors: Preferably dark, not too much contrast, because of readability of icons and texts. The picture should still look good in 16 bit color depth. The leftmost and bottom part of the picture should leave sufficient space for desktop icons and the KDE menu bar. The right border of the picture would be optimal for holding the authors copyright and web address in a decent and unobtrusive way ("designed by: webaddress", for example). KDE Desktop theme is usually "plastik" or "keramik", which doesn't mean that the picture has to match this style. File size: When compressed as PNG (good for pictures without gradients) or JPEG (good for pictures with gradients), the wallpaper should not exceed 500kB, since this could cause a performance loss in loading speed from CD or DVD otherwise. Bootscreen: =========== Format: 640 x 400 Pixels in 16 Colors (!), Color No. 7 should be a light color, because it's the text color in the isolinux splash screen. Colors: No gradients if possible, since the picture will be runlength-encoded. File size: Compressed GIF, max. 12kB. Additional: There should be enough free room for fitting a "KNOPPIX versionnumber" logo and a very short help, which will be added using GIMP without changing colors. ksplash_top.png (possibly also other ksplash files) =================================================== Format: 400x265 Pixels, suitable for postprocessing with GIMP. Colors: of your choice, but should still look OK with a 16bit indexed color table. Additional: Usually, the KDE-splashscreen is just the somewhat changed and downscaled wallpaper. It doesn't have to be that way, though. Background graphics for the HTML help files =========================================== Format: ca. 800x600 Pixels, maybe larger. Picture will be placed as text background via CSS, non-repeating. It should probably fade-out in black at the bottom and right corners. Additional: On top of the graphics, there should be space for a Knoppix headline and writing of about 100 pixels in width, 20 pixels in height. Taking part in the knoppix-graphics contest: ============================================ Send contributions to: knoppix-graphics (at) knopper (dot) net. Since most graphics file formats are already compressed, it is sufficient to just attach the individial files instead of creating an archive (which may be subject to accidentially get deleted by virus/spamfilters on the intermediate mail gateways anyways). But most important: Please make sure to include a plaintext LICENSE file that matches the conditions mentioned above. Otherwise we will have to delete the pictures, unseen, following german copyright law. (If mailtraffic exceeds a certain amount, we will probably provide a webform for upload instead of an email address).
